Hi, thanks for your query.
Tetracyclines mainly differ in their absorption and elimination when given orally. Oxytetracycline has a moderate degree of absorption with the bioavailability of 60 to 70 %. It is widely distributed.
It is a short acting tetracycline as its serum half life is about 6 to 8 hours. Serum half life is the time taken for the drug to be reduced in to half of its original concentration. This determines the frequency (how many times the drug needs to be given daily) of drug administration.
Proper maintainence of plasma level of a drug is necessary to achieve an effective therapeutic benefit and to prevent unnecessary side effects.Dose of the drug determines this.
Since Oxytetracycline is a short acting drug with rapid elimination rate, it has to be given as 250mg per day at four times a day .
Hope I have answered your query.
