What Is The Remedy For Depression And Headaches After A Head Injury Cosidering I Was A Recreational Marijuana User?

To start off, I am a 17 year old male. I have had one major head injury three years ago from a 13 ft. drop head first onto cement. I had several fractures and bleeding on the brain. I was hospitalized for a week and then was released. I haven t had any problems since except for occasional migraines and headaches. Last year i was a recreational marijuana user for about 6 months (july 2012-january 2013) but then i stopped cold turkey. Due to some family and personal issues i believe i went through a mild depression, which has escalated since. In mid-April of last year though, i started to feel a little disconnected from life. I could still behave normally but something was a little off. It felt like i was sort of buzzed of alcohol. A kind of fog over me. I thought it would wear off or go away but since then, it has escalated severly and as begun to get in the way of my school, work, and family. I have also been getting migraines and headaches more often. I take medicine but nothing helps them. I noticed that a few weeks ago, when i went on a hike, i would get very light headed, dizzy, and run out of breath quickly. I used to run close to 4 miles a day but had to stop due to more school work and the job i had got last December. I feel disconnected. Its is really hard to describe in words. Lately it has been hard staying focused, forming my thoughts into words and just plain living. It has led more into my depression. I am just scared and confused right now and honestly dont know what to do. I told my parents i have been getting headaches more often and they said they would schedule my a docters appointment with my Pediatrician, but i just want to prepare myself for what could be wrong with me. I am sorry for this long ramble but i thank you for taking the time to go over this. Thank you, Kevin.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your detailed description of symptoms, it was helpful in making a diagnosis.

The most likely cause of your symptoms is depression. In addition, the old head injury is also contributing. Use of marijuana has also adversely affected you. However, it is good to note that you have stopped using it.

You would benefit from using antidepressants and counselling.

In addition, anti-migraine drugs such as divalproex would also help you. This drug, in addition to being anti-migraine, is also a mood stabiliser.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
