My son found to have enlarged bladder on my 36wk ultrasound. Since birth, 8 months ago, bladder still large and can hold 10oz urine. No reflux , no blockage found on vcug, ultrasound of spine and then MRI of spine at 4mos all came back normal , saw neurologist who said he is growing and doing everything he is supposed to be doing so doesn t think it s brain related. We catheterize every 6hrs with residuals of about 5-7oz in am and anywhere from 0.50-4oz the 3remaining caths of day. Seems to have more residuals after sleep/nap. Scared, worried, what s going on? Please help
Hello Thanks for query .Your 8 months old son has high capacity bladder .In view of all the related investigations like MCU,MRI of spine it is most likely that he has Congenital Neurogenic Bladder .
Neurogenic bladder is a condition where one does not get sensation of urge to pass urine even when bladder is filled with large volume of urine or one does not void urine due to lack of bladder contractions to propel urine to initiate act of urination .
You need to consult qualified Paediatric Urologist for assessment and further treatment .
He may need surgery of urinary diversion like Metrofenoffs procedure so that you can empty his bladder through neo urethra till the age he is capable of doing it himself .
