What Is The Risk Of Managing IBS Without Consulting A Gastroenterologist?
What is the risk of managing my IBS without consulting a gastroenterologist? I have had two colonoscopies without incident over the years. I am 68 yrs if age and under regular care of a rheumatologist and an internist. What is the usual treatment for someone with IBS-A? I tried to make an appointment with a GI doc I researched, but I have to wait 4 months for an appointment!
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional bowel disorder. No clear diagnostic markers exist for IBS; thus the diagnosis of the disorder is based on clinical presentation.
Treatment of Irritable bowel syndrome alternating type (IBS-A) usually involves education, reassurance, and dietary/lifestyle changes.
Gastroenterologist consultation is usually needed to rule out other possibilities like celiac sprue and also for Sigmoidoscopic examination.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
