What Is The Significance Of Pre And Postprandial Measurements In Gestational Diabetes?

Dear Dr.

My wife is pregnant in the beginning of her 26th week. she had her glucose two hour test measured twice:

in week 21 returned the results: 79 limit 90, 185 after one hor limit 180 and 155 after 2 hours and limit is 155.

again she took the test in week 25 and the results were: 75,171 and 175.

She was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, we are in Germany, in the hospital the doctor gave her a monitoring log where she needs to measure herself 7 times before and after each meal and before she sleeps.

After 3 days and with good diet all her numbers are fairly below the limit of 90 and 140 before and after each meal. Except one number which is the one before she sleeps they expect less than 90 and it usually returns 96. No we don't know why is that and through my search over internet I did not find anyone speaking about this test. This test usually make her very nervous before she sleeps which result in a bad sleep, plus it prevents her from having small bed time snack in irder to get this number right.

My question do we really need to do this last test, what is its significance and can she be asked to use insulin just because this one reading before sleep is higher than normal. Please advice as we are very nervous and our meeting with the doctor is not before Monday.

Thanks a lot

Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. A single deranged blood sugar reading does not needs insulin injection to correct it. A blood sugar level of 96 is only borderline deranged and needs only diet correction.
Moreover, if she is only on diabetic diet, then there is no need to do her 7 sample blood sugar test daily. She needs to do it once in every 2 weeks, and if the sugars are within normal range, then she should continue doing it at this interval only.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Wishing you good health.
