What Is The Treatment For Hip Joint Pain?

Dear Dr. Keerthi,

Compliments of the Seasons !! I am Dipsikha Banerjee, aged 55 years. I am suffering from lower back pain and knee-joint pain for the past several years. My hysterectomy done at the age of 38 years. Till then I am on Livial and sometime on calcium supplements. For the back and knee pain I was prescribed Mega Free Flex tabs. But for the last 7/8 months I am getting hip-joint pain (right side) which is continuing from hip-joint to thigh and culf muscle. Sometimes pain is so severe that I cannot sleep in the night. Doctor prescribed Gabapin 300 mg (twice daily) and Tryptomer 25/10mg (once at bed time) for this. After using them I got some relief from the pain but again it has come back and I am spending sleepless night. Please help me - shall I continue with this medicine or you will suggest something else. Please let me know the side effects of these medicines since I am using them for quite sometime.

Orthopaedic Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

I have studied your case.
As per your history there can be hip arthritis which can be degenerative or due to avascular necrosis of femoral head [AVN].
I will advise you do X ray of hip again and you can consult me with reports or with your doctor.

Till time take analgesic and cartilage protecting medication like glucosamine sulphate.
For hip arthritis joint flexion, extension and rotation exercises will help.
Physiotherapist will help you better to learn more exercises in proper protocol.
If required intra-articular injection can be given.

Diet rich in calcium and protein will help.

Pain on climbing stairs can be associated with knee osteoarthritis; do you have knee pain while climbing upstairs?
At age of 55 osteoporosis can be associated so you may need to take calcium supplement.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing you good health.

Take care
