What Is The Treatment For Severe Knee Pain?

I slipped and fell onto my knee. No real swelling or bruising but have pain, especially when bending the knee. I elevated it overnight, iced it, have a knee brace and took Aleve. Is there anything else I can do, or how do I know if it is something serious?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
If pain is not very severe the you are doing exactly right. You should continue ice application, compression bandage and elevation of the limb. If every thing is normal then it is ok. If pain progress then I would recommend you to get X ray of the knee joint, and if there is any hair line fracture is seen then you will need a splint for this. Some time this type of injury can cause patella fracture and it might need immobilization. If this pain stays for some time and there is some difficulty in movement and X ray is normal then you should get a MRI of the knee joint that will tell us if there is any ligament or cartilage injury is there.
