Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
It can be cartilage injury also called meniscus tear. It happens due to sudden twisting movement at the knee joint. This meniscus is must for cushion like knee functions and if it is torn then it can cause same symptoms as you are feeling right now. My advice to you is that you should get MRI of the knee joint and it it is showing knee cartilage damage then plan for knee arthroscopy surgery.
