What Makes It Difficult For My Knees To Straighten?

Dr. Sjnjel, Need your help. I had a hard fall to my right knee. Before I fell I could straighten both knees no problem. I do have arthritis in both knees but right one is worse. Anyway, never had a problem to straighten knees. Since I fell I cannot bend my right knee completely straight. I had arthroscopic surgery too. Doctors are saying its my arthritis...MY QUESTION IS THIS...I HAD THE SAME ARTHRITIS BEFORE THE FALL AND MY KNEE WOULD STRAIGHTEN. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT SOME MUSCLES OR TENDONS IN BACK OF KNEE ARE CAUSING MY RT KNEE NOW NOT TO STRAIGHTEN? SHOULD I GET TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

I don't think that arthritic changes in your knee joint is the cause for your inability to straigten the knee (as you were able to do it before injury with the same arthritic changes).

I suspect that you might have caused either a bony injury or meniscal cartilage injury that might be resulting in your inability to straighten the knee joint.

I suggest you to undergo MRI scan for your knee joint which will reveal any underlying soft tissue problem in the knee joint.

The definitive management depends on the condition diagnosed. Remember, total knee replacement surgery is always the last option.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
