What Medication Can Be Given For A Child Who Has Cough?

We recently moved to Brussels from India. My son is 6 year old. He is having severe caugh from last 4 days. We took him to a pediatrician who, after observation, said that the lungs are clean. The caugh is more during nights and he often gets fever also because of continous caugh. He prescribed Seretide and Toplexil syrup. We are using the same since last 3 days.. but nothing has changed much. Now he is suffering from running nose and started complaining of ear pain also. My Son's earlier pediatrician from India used to prescribe Cepodem 100 Oral suspension for continued throat infection. Can we use the same now ?

Hello,
I have gone through your query and understand your concern.
Your child is suffering from Upper Respiratory Tract Infection.
That is why his lungs are clear and the symptoms of running nose and ear pain.
Since the most of the upper respiratory tract infections are caused by virus, Antibiotics is usually not needed. Antibiotics do not kill germs which are viruses
Symptoms are typically at their worst for initial 2-3 days, and then gradually clear.
However, the cough may carry on after the infection has gone. This is because swelling (inflammation) in the airways, caused by the infection, can take a while to settle.
It may take 2-3 weeks, after other symptoms have gone, for a cough to clear completely.
Antibiotics like cefpodoxime may even make symptoms worse, as some people develop side-effects such as diarrhoea, feeling sick or a rash.

Thus do not take any antibiotic now. Wait for a week or two and continue the syrups recommended by your Primary care physician.

Hope this helps.
Please write back for further queries.
Wishing you good health.
