What Prognosis Is Recommended For Recurrent Seizures?
My 24 year old has severe seizures and takes phenobarbital. Problem is he s had 6 this year , broke or lost all of his teeth from falling and has had 18 stitches, almost lost an eye. He is now clumsy and can t remember things and I work with demintia patients and I see signs. He s such a beautiful smart boy and at 21 he lost everything, driving, living alone and now he needs permanent disability. I m scared. He has had 6 concussions and the hospital Dr. Said the next one could kill him. AND WE HAVE NO INSURANCE, so NO one will give him an MRI. What do I do, my heart is breaking and he s so embarrassed of his teeth.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Seizure onset at this age needs to be classified. Possibility of juvenile myoclonic epilepsy should be kept. Phenobarbitone is not good for some epilepsy types. Better to consult a Neurologist for change in drug. Many good antiepileptic drugs like Valproate, Levetiracetam, Lacosamide, Carbamazepine are available.
