What Should I Do When My Psychiatric Medication Is Causing Weight Gain, Gynecomastia, Dry Mouth, Extreme Hunger And Insomnia?

I currently take psychiatric medications that have caused weight gain, gynecomastia, dry mouth, extreme hunger, insomnia, and constatly being thirsty; but, my psychiatrist seemingly refuses to change it(even though I have told her about this). I m currently over 340 lbs, and even though I exercise, I have trouble losing weight; what should I do?

Hi,

It is important to have open and honest communication with your psychiatrist about any side effects or concerns you have with your medications. If your problems are not adequately addressed, consider seeking a second opinion from another mental health professional.

They may be able to offer alternative treatment options or suggest adjustments to your current regimen. Additionally, it may be helpful to work with a nutritionist or dietitian to develop a weight loss plan that is safe and effective for you. Regular exercise and physical activity can also aid in weight loss and overall physical and mental health.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
