What To Do If Voice Stopped Suddenly In A Patient With A History Of Stroke?

Hi, my father aged 62 years has been a heart patient for the past 25 years. She is an alcoholic and a smoker. He had a brain stroke last year and fully recovered. But the sad story being he got back to alcohol and cigarettes. He suffered a second stroke about 2 weeks ago - he fell down and was unconscious (patient does not remember anything) - he was rushed to the hospital on time and was saved. He has been ok and talking since - but suddenly since this morning he is not responding in general - eating yes but no voice. What should be our plan of action?

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your father's symptoms. The sudden loss of voice is a sign of new stroke. This occurs because of lack of blood flow to the left side of brain.

He should be immediately taken to emergency room and a neurologist should be consulted. If thrombolytic (clot buster) therapy with actilyse can be given to him, he can recover his speech.

After this, he should be taken through an alcohol de-addiction and smoking cessation program.

Aspirin and statins should also be continued to prevent more strokes in future.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
