Hi,
Thanks for the query.

I understand that you are having menstrual abnormalities after having an IUD inserted. It would help to know the type [or name] of the IUD and if these symptoms have been going on since 3 years or have started recently as the probable diagnosis differs in both cases.

In any case, the bleeding seems to be heavy and needs investigation. The possible causes in your case are:
1. bleeding caused due to IUD as sometimes the body behaves as if the IUD is a foreign body and fails to accept it.
2. endometritis or infection of the uterine lining leading to heavy bleed.
3. tumors of the uterus like fibroids or polyps leading to bleeding.
4. hormonal dysfunction causing irregular bleeding.

If you have been experiencing similar complaints since the time of insertion of the IUD, the cause could be the IUD or infection. In this case get a cervical and vaginal swab culture done as well as a pap smear to rule out possible infection. If there is infection a dose of antibiotics will help in cure depending upon the organism. If there is no infection, try to change the type of IUD, use a smaller one or a hormone containing IUD like Mirena to help control bleeding.

If the symptoms are recent, than either new infection or other causes like fibroids and polyps or hormones need investigation. You will need an ultrasound examination and further treatment will depend upon the cause.

Hope I was able to help you. Thanks for using Health Care Magic.
I would be happy to answer any further queries.
Have a nice day.
