hello , i have a question , my son is 23 and is type 1 diabetes and wasn't on any insulin for about two years he is now do to no insurens and just being stupid he was in the hospital for 4 days and is now back his insalin his sugars are now between 125 to 235 from 500 a few weeks ago he is taken Novolin 70/30 twice a day 40 units . the problem is his legs and feet and extremely swollen with water we been to the er 3 times cause of this and they keep says its because he was very low in protein but this started to happen we he started this insulin they had him on a different kind we he was in the hospital why is this happening to him .
one of the main side effects of insulin is water retension. This is the reason why patient gain weight of insulin therapy. But in your son's case there is an established medical condition which is hypoproteinemia. So i would advice my patient to correct the protein deficiency by parentral nutrition. Once the proteins increases the swelling may subside.
