When To Visit An ER While Suffering From A Seizure Disorder?
Hello, I have Stage II Emphysema (asymptomatic) and a seizure disorder (well treated with medication) but in generally good health and physically fit. Normal body temperature has always been a bit low, typically 97. Yesterday began experiencing phantom smells (wet band-aids). This morning exhibited flu-like symptoms that progressed as the day went on and now feels like full-blown flu, except have back and chest pain (no coughing). Temp is now down to 95. Have taken no medication except my nightly seizure meds, no "auras" or feeling of oncoming seizures. Great GP of 20+ years but hard to get an appt; his traditional advice is, if I feel it can't wait, go to ER. At what point do you feel is the "can't wait" stage?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
For a seizure, if the seizure is prolonged, or if it leads to loss of consciousness or if more than one seizure occurs in a day, it is better to visit ER. Also, if there are severe adverse effects such as skin allergy or liver dysfunction, a visit to ER would be advisable.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
