A cough during a respiratory illness may associated with wheezing or allergic disease. Salbutamol can treat wheezing or asthma, and a steroid preparation may be needed if this does not resolve the problem. Diphenhydramine is an anti histamine used to treat allergic responses, but will not help with wheezing. If there is itchiness and allergic rash and no fever, and a history of allergies, then this may be indicated. Dextrom will help suppress the cough but will not treat the underlying cause. If your child has an uncomplicated cold, most resolve on their own in 7-10 days. Please follow her temperature and call your doctor for persistent or worsening symptoms.
