Which Specialist Doctor Should Be Consulted For Memory Loss After A Nose Bleed?

Hi,
My mother had a severe nose bleed today and is on a blood thinner. She is 91 years old. I took her to the emergency room but the bleeding stopped just before we arrived. The doctors took her blood pressure and heart rate and all seemed fine. She complained of a slight headache and ringing in her ears on the same side as the nostril that was bleeding.
When I returned home, she did not remember that she even had a nose bleed!! She has short term memory loss and now I am concerned that that was a mini stroke of some kind and that affected her memory and it will worsen.
What sort of doctor should she see?

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear your mother has had memory loss, I can understand why you'd be concerned.

The best doctor to see initially may actually be your primary care doctor, since you can probably get in to see him/her sooner, and he/she may be able to make a diagnosis based on physical exam and some mental acuity tests that all primary care doctors should be able to do.

She may also have a temporary condition like an infection that may be interfering with her cognition.

Beyond that, if your mother needs to see a specialist, it would most likely be a neurologist, who can help both with the diagnosis of a stroke, or onset of dementia, whatever the case may be.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
