Why Am I Unable To Control Bowel Movements?

I am unable to control my bowel movements at times. If I don t go to the bathroom right away, I am unable to control it. Why is this happening? I am 54 years old, female. I am a diabetic, taking medications, and I have it under control. I like going for walks after dinner, but most of the time I have to cut it short because of the need to go the the bathroom. Please help.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history about a 54 year old female with known diabetes and have developed incontinence and urgency to pass motion.
The most probable cause can be one or the combination of the following:
- Due to diabetes the anal sphincters can become lax and hence the problem.
-There may be colitis and mucus which makes control difficult.
I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Get a clinical evaluation, examination and per-rectal digital as well as anoproctoscopy examination to know the tone of the anal sphincters and any ano-proctitis.
Colonoscopy helps further to know the cause.
Control of diabetes is very important.
Medications for the primary disease if any.
Symptomatic treatment.
Avoid foods and beverages that cause such a problem.
