Why Do Medicines Not Work For Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease?

My mother passed away a year and a half ago. I guess because of the emotional state the family is in no one spoke to me about the process of going home. My mother had COPD, congestive heat failure and neurpohy. I have had two questions that I need answered. During the three days my mother was going home she lost her sight. She had a constant fever and although they provided medication to reduce the fever it eventually retured until they advised me that it would not help her. Why do these things happen? Please help me understand.

The lung does not grow back. Destruction of lung tissue occurs with cigarettes and infections, and age and any other damage to the lung. It adds up. There can be inflammation, gunk, and twitchiness of the airways (asthma) these can be helped by medications but the lung damage cannot. With holes in the lung or severe blockages or a lot of gunk or cancer, infections are blocked in and cannot be cleared out.
