Why Does My Father Sleep So Much?

my 85 year old father is sleeping 8 hours a night. Gets up and eats breakfast and goes back to sleep for at least 3 hours. He has copd, emphasyma, pad. He had surgery for melanoma on back of his left shoulder a week ago today. Any suggestions on why he sleeps so much. When he first gets up his legs are wobbly and he has no strength in them.

Geriatrics Specialist 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Based on your query, my opinion is as follows.
1. At this age, he requires more rest. He has few chronic conditions and also has come out a recent surgery. He will require rest.
2. He needs to improve his nutrition and also do some leg strengthening exercises to improve his legs.
3. If necessary, he can use a walking stick to improve his balance. Family support and social interaction is crucial.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
