Why Does My Knee Hurt While Lying Down In A Fetal Position?

yes, thank you. upon lying down I am lying in fetal position( iether side). I have pain in my knees touching. Also pain that sems to radiate down through my legs. It wakes me up and I must change position to lay on my back. I have put a pillow between my knees which helps a bit. Thank you. Julie.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

It might be due to osteoarthritis (age related wear and tear) if you are in older age group. However, we have to rule out other conditions causing similar clinical picture. Get an MRI scan to look for any lesions and any possible ligament and or tendon injury. As of now, you can apply any over the counter analgesic creams, like Diclofenac cream. If MRI shows anything abnormal better to consult an orthopedician and get evaluated.

Wishing you good health.

Thanks.
