My stool smells strongly of acetone when I've been drinking heavily - rather like I dumped a bottle of nail polish remover into the toilet. This has only been the case for the last two years or so. I'm a 28-year-old woman in good physical condition - no overweight, no diabetes, but suffer from asthma. I drink infrequently, but two years ago I was drinking very heavily for protracted periods. I'd like to know if the smell is something to be concerned about. Thank you for your help.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Drinking heavily inhibits production of insulin from pancreas resulting in decreased utilization of glucose to produce calories.
Alternatively, body burns body fat to produce calories and hence ketones are formed as a by-product. These ketones build up in body and are excreted in urine and faeces. Hence the smell.
As such, you don't need to worry. Just reduce intake of alcohol.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
