Why Does The Throat Hurt When Swallowing?

ok, so here is the problem. my friend's throat hurts when he swallows and itches. there was no white patches in the back of the throat but then again this is the third day he's had the problem. when i looked at his throat, it was red and it almost looked as a white glaze (sorry, if you like donuts) on the sides of his throat. what do you think is going on??? do you think he should go in???
