Why Is A Broken Leg, Repaired With A Rod Having Severe Pain?

My wife had a rod put in her tibia 12 years ago. The break was bad and she also has a weak bone structure. After complaining of knee pain her surgeon, (not the one that did the operation) he sent her to therapy, and that s making everything so much worse. The therapist even said today was her last day. It seems obvious that the rod needs to be removed . This was actually tried after 3 years but during the operation the doctor said he gave the the break area a microscopic x-ray and saw that the leg was still not healed properly so back in the rod went. so I guess the question is ,because of the pain ,she wants this rod out ,but could this leg still be broken or at least not healed right so that the rod must stay in..???? Thanks for your query.
As the rod was put 12 yrs back, the bone might be completely healed. The newly formed bone can push the implant and this can cause severe pain.
Better option is to take another x ray to confirm the growth.
Consult your ortho surgeon.
