Why Is It Safe To Clean Vagina And Penis After Having Intercourse ?

I am 26 years girl, recently married. I have heard that it is good to wash the vagina and penis after having intercourse. We have intercourse almost daily. After he ejaculates, I wash my vagina. But he just goes to sleep. I tried telling him, but he does not listen. What all problems can this cause?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. It is best to avoid washing the vagina as it disturbs the normal contents and prones for vaginal infection. He can wash his penis with warm running water. You can urinate after sex to reduce chances of urinary infection after sex. There will be no problem even if you both do not wash. Nothing to worry, it is just for hygiene sake and to prevent urinary tract infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Aashish Raghu
