Why Is One Advised To Avoid Grapefruit/juice While On Oxycodone 30 Mg?

I was prescribed Oxycodone 30 mg tablets after my back surgery. I picked the medication up and noticed a sticker that said tomavoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice. They gave no further information. Grapefruit is something I have for breakfast every morning. I need information as to why I need to avoid two of my favorite things and also, what possible side effects that it could cause. Thank you

Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I appreciate your concern for taking grapefruit/juice while on Oxycodone.

Normally drugs like Oxycodone are metabolized to inactive form in the liver by certain specific enzymes. Grapefruit juice inhibit those enzymes concerned with the metabolism of Oxycodone and thus increase its level in the blood which can cause harmful effects.
You may choose an alternative citrus beverage (such as orange juice) or mango juice, etc.

Hope the explanation given could answer your query.
Wishing you best of your health.
