Why Is There Swelling In Toe After Having Screws Placed To Hold Cartilage In Place During Surgery For Freiberg Infraction?

Sept 6th 2013 I had surgery for Freiberg infraction right foot second metatarsal, during surgery they placed two screws to hold the cartilage in place around the joint. Surgery went great no big pain until I started walking my 5 miles a day at the beginning of November. December my toe was still swollen and painful when wearing boots or any shoe other than my running shoes. My surgeon took x-rays in December bone looks great but it showed one of the screws had shifted. I had two screws removed from my right foot second metatarsal Jan 2,2014 along with the screw he had to remove a lot of scar tissue that I am assuming was caused from all of my walking post surgery. It has only been a little over a week since surgery but I can still feel that same sharp burning pain under my toe that goes straight to the top of my foot, should some of the pain be gone or at least feel different since the screw were removed? is this normal? How long does it usually take for recovery after hardware removal? And how long should I wait to start exercising again.

Removal of screw or any other implant can cause some pain because of soft tissue injury you get during surgery. i would assure you that your pain will go after some time say few weeks. I hope your doctor has checked your dressing and your wound is healing well. Also during night time you keep your limb elevated over a pillow. This will decrease swelling.
