Why Would A Cut Cause Pain And How Can I Treat It?

Hello, I cut my thumb just below the knuckle last night after picking up a broken cup - the cut was relatively deep about 2cms across but has stopped bleeding although the location means it s not closing the best. However below the cut if I touch a certain part of my thumb I get a shooting sharp pain through my whole hand and it s hurts a lot. Why would a cut cause this pain and how can I treat it?

Hello,

The cut goes thru superficial nerves. Icing or a small amount of lidocaine is amazingly effective, but it would not be throughout the entire hand.

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Matt Wachsman
