Will Celexa For Anxiety Interfere With My Birth Control Pills?

I have just started the generic form of Celexa (Citalopram) for anxiety about a week ago. I have been taking the birth control pill Orthocept for about 3 years, almost 4 years. Will Celexa (Citalopram) interfere with my birth control and cause it to become less effective? Thank you for your feedback!

Hi & Welcome.

There is no documented interaction between the two.

Celexa (Citalopram) is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI) used in the treatment of depression, anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder and other conditions.

If taken along with the birth control pill (desogestrel /ethinyl estradiol), Celexa does interfere with the contraceptive effects of Ortho-Cept hence can be taken safely.

Hope this answers your query.

A feedback is appreciated.
