Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
Low thyroid hormone levels are common in women, so
thyroid disease is not unusual to see in pregnant women.
It is true that the mother provides most of the thyroid hormone for the baby until late
pregnancy, and profoundly low levels can cause developmental problems in the baby. However, if the level is corrected with medication, there is no reason why you and your wife cannot have a healthy baby.
So I recommend your wife to follow your doctor's advice and take the medication as prescribed. The level should be checked again in 3-4 weeks to see if the dosage needs to be changed.
I want to reassure you that with proper
medical care there is no reason your child should have any developmental problems.
I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
