Will Blood Sugar Go To Normal Level If Prednisone Is Stopped?
My mom has type2 diabetes, she has a lot of skin rashes all over her body. She said it is very itchy & couldn t even sleep @ night. She s 94 yrs. old. MDs treated her with different topical creams, oint. but to no avail until we took her to ER & prescribed her prednisone 60 mg x3 days, then 40 mg x3 dyas, 30 mg x3 days, 20 mgx3 days then 10 mg x3 days. Now she s almost done with her prenisone 3 more days & no more skin rashes. Her blood glucose is elevated from 300 mg/dl to 500 mg/dl. Is it ok to stop now the prednisone & is her bs will go back to normal level?
Your mother's blood sugar was 300mg/dl before starting Prednisolone. You have not mentioned whether it is fasting or after food. Any way whichever it may have been, her diabetes was not under control. As expected the blood sugar went up with steroid use. This would come down after the prednisolone is discontinued but may not reach normal levels unless better care is taken than before. If you have further queries, I am available. Dr. Noble Zachariah.
