Will Food Swallowed Whole Get Dissolved In The Esophagus?

My son swallowed a piece of cereal (kix) whole and complained of a feeling of it being stuck in his throat. We gave him water, and he could swallow. He is 4 years old, and is in some discomfort. Will an object like that disolve in the esophogus soon after and pass into the stomach? Should we see our doctor?
