Will Icing Or Heat Help Alleviate Pain In The Knee And Leg?

My mother who is 82 and very healthy started yesterday experiencing pain in her left knee and leg. Today she unable to put any weight bearing on it at all. It is a little bit inflamed but no injury. She has not fallen or hit it in any way. She took aleve this AM and this Afternoon and the pain has not subsided at all. Do you recommend icing or heat on the knee and how worried should I be?

Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
Apart from taking oral medication, you can do the following to overcome pain and early recovery from injury.
1. Apply ice packs over the region 6th hourly for 15 minutes each time.
2. Apply anti-inflammatory-analgesic gel as a thin layer over the region thrice daily.
3. Keep the foot end elevated while sleeping at bedtime.
4. Avoid bearing weight till the symptoms subside completely.
Gradually, she should be able to recover back to normal.
