Will Splint And Ace Wrap Be Sufficient In The Healing Of Fractured Bone Between In Thumb And Arm?

Fractured the bone between my thumb and wrist- the area that makes up the side of my palm. The doctor did not use a cast, but a splint and an ace wrap. My palm is obviously purple, and there's a black ring around where my thumb knuckle is, but it actually feels like the bone is itching inside my body. Is this normal?

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

For Undisplaced fractures (fractured bony ends lying in opposition), simple immobilization in a splint is sufficient for it to heal. This splint should be maintained for atleast 3 weeks, by which time the fracture becomes "sticky" with the formation of callus, which will prevent any further displacement.

A bit of itching, swelling, and discolouration of skin at the site of injury are considered as normal findings and are a part of injury/inflammatory process occuring at that site.

Hope this information is helpful. Good day
