Will The Birth Control Pill Have Been Affected By Antibiotics?

I take microgynon birth control, I took a ten day course of Penicillin V and used extra contraception during this course. 6 days after finishing the antibiotics, I was still taking my pill daily as I had been doing throughout the course of the antibiotics, but I had intercourse without using an extra conraception. Will the pill have been affected by the antibiotics?

Hi,

Yes, penicillin-V can affect the birth control pill. By altering the normal gut flora antibiotics like penicillin V potassium may reduce the contraceptive effects of microgynon.

Hence to prevent an unwaned pregnancy an alternate method of contraception like condom would be useful while taking the birth control pills and penicillin V together.

Since you have been on microgynon as well as on penicillin-V and you had intercourse without using a barrier method like condom you might be at a risk of getting pregnant.

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
