Will The Tumor Stop Growing After Taking Glivec Tablets For An Year ?
hello doctor,
My husband is 30 years old. An year back he underwent an operation for GIST. right now he is taking glivec 400 mg tablets since the rate of tumor recurrence is very high. The tablets are very expensive and we are not able to buy the tablets. He took it for an year and the doctor has advised him to continue the tablets for another year. After this year can he stop taking the tablets? Will the tumor stop growing since he has taken tablets? Please advice doctor...
In Gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) patients, even after 3 years of continuous Imatinib treatment and no residual disease notable on imaging, interruption of therapy is associated with a high risk of relapse and therefore Imatinib is recommended to be continued until disease progression .
But actual duration of treatment is not known probably it may vary severity of the disease and condition of the patient. Please consult your treating doctor, he will recommend correct duration of therapy to your husband.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
