Would A Cat Scan Have Helped To Know The Injuries From The Extreme Concussion?

My son had a concussion 17 years ago on this date. He was 8 years old. I just looked up his records, which I have kept. He was riding a friend s bicycle with hand breaks. He didn t have a helmet on. When he put on the breaks ,he went over the handlebars and hit his forehead on the curb. A neighbour carried him home. When I saw him , he looked like a monster -his forehead was swollen so far out. He was admitted to the neuro floor, where his vital signs were checked frequently for 24 hours. He didn t ever have a Cat Scan. He is now c/o a swollen side of his forehead on the right side, going down the side of his face. I am wondering if he could have had injuries from that extreme concussion which could affect him today? Would a Cat scan be helpful after all these years?

I read your question carefully and I am sorry about what has happened to your son.

A CAT scan might provide information about whether there are remains of an old brain injury or skull fractures. However in terms of practicality, whether finding out now will make possible some useful cure or procedure, unfortunately after such a long time it wouldn't change anything.

So if it's something which has really been nagging you it can be scheduled, but realistic expectations should be had.

I hope to have been of help.
