Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I went for my smear test on 16 June and I had my result bk today saying they found an abnormal cell I was Wondering coz I m on sertraline medication would that have a affect in my smear test I m really worried I ve not had a DATe yet to have a chopopsty test how ever u spell it
I can understand your concern here and I'll try help as best I can.
Sertraline is an antidepressant and although it can have an affect on sexual functioning and can cause menstrual irregularities, it doesn't have any physical effect on cellular changes of the cervix.
I would suggest to wait to have your colposcopy exam done. The 'Pap' smear is a screening test so it will only pick up possible abnormalities but won't be able to tell definitively if there are issues to be concerned with.
The colposcopy exam can help evaluate the inner walls of the cervix and if there are any abnormalities, your doctor will take biopsies of the suspect tissue and send it away for analysis. Thereafter you doctor will discuss any concerns with you and if any further management is needed.
You can continue with your Sertraline in the meantime.
I hope this helps and good luck.
