X-ray Showed Cervical Spasm And Minimal Disc Space Narrowing At C5/C6 Level. Better With Ibuprofen. Mild Pins And Needles In Left Thumb. Serious?

I used to workout daily and most of it was strength training. I woke up one day with stiff neck and thought it will go away in a day or two but after couple of days my left shoulder and left hand was in severe pain. I went to a chiropractor after reading online that a conservative treatment should be my first option. I got my X-ray done and it mentioned "cervical spasm and minimal disc space narrowing at the C5/C6 level with posterior osteophyte formation and mild encroachment of the neural foramen bilaterally."

I took prescribed ibuprofen for two weeks and the pain in left hand and shoulder was completely gone. What left is pins and needles in my left thumb tip. It's just mild and doesn't interfere with my work at all.

What's causing this considering how mild my pain is? Can I workout normally or should I rest for some more time? Whom should I consult? And will it go away?

Hello!

Thank you for the query.

First of all you need to know that from the spine in the cervical area starts a nerve. This nerve travels from your neck, through the armpit, elbow, wrist to the very end of your fingers. If this nerve is compressed in any of mentioned areas, can give symptoms like yours.
Small compression can cause only pins and needles in the thumb. Just like yours. However the compression does not have to be in the spine. You should know that with the age, every person gets discs narrowing. So if you make an MRI to every person over the age of 30-40, for sure you will find some discs problems. But this discs problems usually does not cause any problems or minor problems.
The point is that your pain does not have to be caused by spine issues. Such symptoms can be also caused by for example carpal tunnel syndrome. This syndrome is caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist. In case of this syndrome, you can suffer from numbness, tingling, pain in the first 3 fingers. Elbow pain and arm or even neck pain can be also present.
You can perform a simple test. Please flex your wrist gently as much as possible and hold it for 60 seconds. If this will cause any pain or tingling, carpal tunnel syndrome is possible.

I suggest you to visit neurologist, have physical examination and EMG if necessary. This test is able to tell which nerve is causing your symptoms and on what level it is compressed.

In a meanwhile you should take some rest from workout. Try to have some exercises relaxing neck and arm muscles. It can be pool swimming for example. Nerve compression can be treated so if you will get proper diagnose, treatment should be effective.

Hope this will help.
Regards.
