Question: How many sentinel nodes are there in the female breast and how many are likely to be removed in a lumpectomy involving stage 1 cancer?

There can be few sentinel lymph nodes.

Sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node to which breast cancer gives metastases. There is usually one sentinel lymph node, however sometimes can be more.
Stage one breast cancer requires sentinel lymph node identification and its biopsy/removal. If there is only one, just this one has to be removed. If there are few, all this few lymph have to be removed.
