Can Tamoxifen Cause Tongue Burning And Loss Of Taste And Smell?
Can oral tamoxifen cause burning of the tongue and foods to taste salty plus the loss of taste and smell? I am 59 1/2 years old , 5 5 , and 152 lbs. Four and a half years post breast cancer dx treated with chemo, lumpectomy, and radiation. This was followed by a little over four years of Aromasin which caused increasing painful side effects and unrelenting fatigue to the point that I considered suicide. Finally when my dr realized I was at the point of losing my job, he ran scans and switched me to tamoxifen. Many of my symptoms are improving.
General & Family Physician, Dr. Priyanka's Response
Hi,
Yes, tamoxifen can cause burning of the tongue and alterations in taste and smell. These symptoms are considered to be uncommon side effects of tamoxifen use, but they have been reported in some cases. If you are experiencing these symptoms, you should inform your doctor as soon as possible.
In some cases, reducing the dosage of tamoxifen or switching to a different medication may be necessary to alleviate the symptoms. Your doctor may also recommend additional tests or examinations to rule out other possible causes of your symptoms. It is important to continue taking your medication as prescribed unless otherwise instructed by your doctor.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
