Suggest Alternative Medication In Place Of Zyrtec

default
Posted on Mon, 10 Aug 2015
Question: I had breast cancer about 3 and a half years ago. went through chemo and radiation. AS a side effect I developed an "itch" which feels like its coming from the inside if my skin. I break into hives and a lot of redness. In the beginning I would make myself bleed due to the low palettes. (?) I take zyrtex to relief but this med takes me out of commission because it makes me sleepy and slow to think. the itchiness is so bad I feel I can get a panic attack. The allergist told me I would need to be a week without zytec but its unbearable. I am presently taking exemestane.

Brief Answer:
alternatives to zyretec

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

There are a number of alternatives to zyretec. Zyretec has increased sedation effects. I would advise non sedating antihistamines such as Fexofenadine or desloratidine, in consultation with your doctor. Topical calamine lotion can be used for the areas where there is intense itching.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Based on your description it appears to be contact dermatitis. You can have more than one triggers. Usually one isolates them by close observation and avoids them in future. To find the specific allergens responsible, skin patch testing is ideal for contact dermatitis. RAST ( Radioallergosorbent test ) is useful for identifying any food allergies. Please consult a dermatologist in this regard to discuss and advise the above investigations to have a better idea of the cause.
