Brief Answer:
anti histamine/decongestants (oral/topical), topical nasal sprays

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The issues with clearing your throat and coughing may be related to post nasal drip.

This is the most common cause of these symptoms.

It can be due to infection or allergies. The infection can be either viral or bacterial but viral infections are far more common and do not respond to or require antibiotics.

Whether due to viral infection or allergy, the treatment is basically the same with only small differences.
Treatment involves rest, fluids, antihistamines and decongestants (oral and topical) and topical steroid nasal sprays ( in some cases)

Anti histamines/decongestants are available in most cough/cold or allergy meds. In addition to the oral med, can also take otrivine nasal drops for 3 to 5 days even if the nose is not blocked.
It helps with the drip, should not be used for longer than this.

Topical nasal sprays such as nasonex, nasocort, flonase, rhinocort, can be used if there is no improvement.

If your symptoms are improving then sticking to the anti histamine/decongestant combination along with rest and fluids, may be enough.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

So how long will this last if i have had it almost a week i just dont feel my self
doctor
Answered by Dr. Michelle Gibson James (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
can last a few weeks

Detailed Answer:
Hi

If related to infection, symptoms can last 1 to 2 weeks in most persons, rarely up to 3 weeks. This related to clearing of the throat. Coughing related to a viral infection can persist for up to 6 weeks, it can persist even if other symptoms resolve, this is called post viral cough

If related to allergies they will wax and wane, come and go until reduce exposure to source of allergy if possible

Brief Answer:
anti histamine/decongestants, topical nasal sprays, cough suppressants

Detailed Answer:
HI

No, it is not life threatening in any way.

You can take the decongestants/anti histamines mentioned, these are over the counter medications
If the coughing is very annoying or persistent, you can use a cough suppressant, which is also over the counter

Please feel free to ask anything else

Would smoking cause this because i have in the past this wouldnt be lung cancer? I smoked for 2years
doctor
Answered by Dr. Michelle Gibson James (15 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
lung cancer is usually after a longer time

Detailed Answer:
hi

Smoking can cause coughing, no usually post nasal drip however.

Lung cancer can occur with smoking but usually after a longer period of time than 2 years so it is not likely.
It would be best though, if possible to stop smoking if you haven't already. Lung cancer isn't the only cancer it causes.

Brief Answer:
understandable

Detailed Answer:
HI

It is understandable that this would be frustrating and difficult to deal with.

The meds and nose spray mentioned should help you.

There are other meds but these would be used if the first line medications are not effective
