Suggest Treatment For H.Pylori And Intermittent Stomach Pain

default
Posted on Sat, 31 Jan 2015
Question: My son was diagnosed with H.Pylori in August although we know he has had it for much longer. It just took that long to figure it out. He was treated with a two week course of medications and a month after he completed his treatment, he tested negative on a breath test. However, he has not yet returned to full health. He still gets sick after he eats and he still has stomach pains several times during each day. His weight is still low. Is this normal and how long does it take to completely recover from this?

Brief Answer:
Advised to repeat upper endoscopy...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the health situation your son is in.

From what you are describing, your son had the last upper endoscopy more than 3 months ago (August). If he still feels ill after getting treatment, I advise to repeat upper endoscopy for further evaluation.

Next, abdominal ultrasound is also advised to rule out cholecyst (biliary) issues.

To my opinion, he might need to take another course of medications together with continuing healthy diet and lifestyle regimen:
- avoid carbonated/alcoholic drinks
- avoid smoking
- avoid spicy, chilly, oily foods

Hope it was of help!

Thank you! This is helpful. He never had an upper endoscopy but had a upper GI thing done where he drank a liquid, waited about 45 minutes and then had a wand passed over his stomach to find out if he had crohn's disease or ulcers. He was negative for both. Will an upper endoscopy find anything different? I thought the doctor said the upper GI would give us more information than the endoscopy but I could be mistaken. In your opinion, do his continued symptoms indicate more tests are needed? Or can it take this long to resolve H. Pylori?
Thank you again. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Upper endoscopy,abdominal ultrasound

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Thank you for your follow up queries.
1. Upper endoscopy is highly recommended as it will give more details on the present condition of mucosa of the stomach and duodenum.

2. The examination he ran is not enough to evaluate his current situation.

3. I am happy that he is not having inflammatory disease. However, even in this case, colonoscopy is the examination of choice.

Hope it was of help!
