Question: Hi! My mom is 53y/o, she has this condition of having coin sized bump on the forehead which we doesn't know the cause. Brief Answer:
May be hemangioma - please give details and photo

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read and understood that your Mother has coin sized bum on the forehead, which comes and goes away. It is painless and does not appear to be red.

I would like to know a few details for me to assist you further:
- Since when is this happening - few days/months or years - how many?
- Was there any trauma over this area in the past?
- Is it coming at the same spot every time?
- It looks you have not yet consulted any Doctor and not undergone any investigations.

Please post a photograph is possible, for me to understand it more.

thank you for an immediate response. Its been goin on for a few years now, it comes and it goes, like 3-5 times a year, usually appears on the forehead only, it looks like as if she bumped her head on a hard surface but she doesn't, it will appear every morning upon waking up the bump will be there. sometimes its in the frontal area, I don't have a picture but I found something on the net that looks exactly like that of my mom, I hope this would do.

Brief Answer:
Clinical evaluation and investigations if it is not a allergic problem.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your appreciation and feedback, albeit short of the queries I asked like - history of trauma in the past, whether coming at the same spot and so on.

If the swelling is coming in the same spot and is reduced on its own, this is most probable a vascular problem like a hemangioma or aterio-venous fistula. Whenever the pressure within increases it will pop out and whenever the pressure is reduced it may vanish to re-appear at the same spot next time. This is usually painless and hence not bothered by the patient. There may be a history of trauma in the past.

If it is coming on different parts of the forehead at different times then it would be an allergy, also called as angioneurotic edema.

I would advise in such a case the following:
Get a clinical examination done by a General Surgeon for proper examination and to get a clinical diagnosis confirmed, order for investigation like CT angiography to see the extent of the problem.

The treatment will depend upon the findings of the lesion.

I hope your mother is not diabetic or hypertensive or not taking any medicines at the moment.

Thanks for the net-pictures, has helped a bit to understand the problem and assist you accordingly.

Thank you doc. There was no known history of trauma, I've experienced the same thing, I woke up and suddenly there was a bump on my forehead but it was gone after a few hours. She isn't diabetic but there is a history in the family.

Thanks for your feedback

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
You too have experience the same thing.
It is possible that there may be something in the food or in the atmosphere in the house like mites or molds and mildews that can cause such an occurrence.
Was the bump on your forehead similar to that your Mother gets?
Is the bump occurring at different spots every time?

Yes doc its exactly the same, its in the forehead but it goes around the forehead like example in the morning its in frontal part then I notice it will change position to the temporal part in the afternoon and it will slowly reduce its size and will fade, usually last for a day or few hours only.

Brief Answer:
Symptomatic treatment and try to find the cause.

Detailed Answer:
If it is changing position then it is an allergic problem and you may then please consult your Doctor to get the investigations done and get a prescription based treatment in the form of an antihistamine, oral steroids and some empirical treatment like dewormin (for intestinal worms), multivitamins and so on.

Simultaneously you have find out the possible reasons in the house as I mentioned above like, dust, mites, rugs not cleaned for a long time, molds and mildews, pets, scents used by any one in the house. It is the keen observation that can help to have preventive action on that particular problem creating things.
