Suggest Treatment For Floaters And Flashes Of Light In Eyes

Question: Hi doctor:

Approximately 5 months ago, I had a sudden figure in my right eye that came on very suddenly just a few days after I hit my eye with a mascara brush. Went to the eye doctor and he said it was a floater. Aging process. Days later I developed flashing lights like lightning in the dark for about a month or so, even when driving at night. This got better but the floaters I then developed what looks like dots and hair in my eye plus that original figure. Went back to the eye dr. and he said there were again floaters. They do not float they stay in my direct vision at all times when looking at a white background and especially driving. I am getting concerned that these so called floaters are in my direct vision and only move when I move my eye. Please advise. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Floaters are harmless no need to be worried.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Welcome to Health care magic

I am Dr Dadapeer k an ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.
I reviewed your history.

It seems from the history that you are having floaters in right eye. Floaters as told by your eye doctor are because of age related degenerations occurring in the vitreous a gel like structure which lies behind the lens. Because of age related changes this vitreous becomes partly liquid and this presents as floaters.
This is a normal phenomenon and this is seen in more than 50% of normal people after the age of 60 years and no need to be worried about it.

You need to consult your eye doctor if there is sudden increase in the floaters and if these are associated with flashes of light. The presence of these symptoms requires evaluation by simple test called as indirect ophthalmoscopy to look for retinal conditions. If this test is done and it is normal, then no need to be worried.

Floaters by themselves are harmless and gradually disappear over time.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Hi Doctor:

Thank you for your quick response.

I did see flashes for about a month after the first time I noticed a floater. The flashes did get better, but the floaters didn't. Could you pls explain why these floaters are in my direct vision and dont come and go they are always there? They want me to see a retina specialist if they dont go away. Is the testing for retina invasive?

Brief Answer:
This testing for retina is not invasive.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thank you for the follow up.

The retinal specialist will do indirect ophthalmoscopy as I mentioned.
This is not a invasive test.
This is a simple test done in out patient room and your retinal specialist will look for retinal conditions like retinal degeneration, retinitis...

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.
