Question: Hi, my 8 month old son started fever 6 days back. He had mouth ulcer and mild rashes. The paediatrician identified this as hand, foot, mouth disease and prescribed supportive treatment of paracetemol 125 1 ml. My family doctor is suggesting that i take a blood test since fever is more than 6 days old. He also advised azithral. I am confused. Please advise.

Brief Answer:
Do not worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I understand your concerns but don't worry. Hand, foot and mouth disease is usually a clinical diagnosis associated with fever followed by oral ulcerations and rashes on palms, soles and buttocks. In case there is any doubt regarding diagnosis, then it can be confirmed by serological tests available in labs.

Most cases improve with in a few days and need just symptomatic treatment as suggested by your earlier doctor. Also a good nutrition and hydration is essential.

But in case the condition is not improving at all and child remains febrile even after a week with poor activity and oral intake then it's important to reassess him for any associated or other illness. So, I would recommend you to visit a pediatrician for repeat clinical examination. They may advice you for lab evaluation such as throat swab, CBC, CRP, ESR, blood culture, urine examination, serology for viral infections as per clinical findings.

Hopefully it will be of help.I would be happy to help you in any further questions.
Take care

Brief Answer:
No need at present

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Azithral has no role in hand foot and mouth disease. It won't harm but it will also not help him. So, hold it till proper re -examination.
Take care
