What Causes Abnormal Menstrual Bleeding After Taking Plan-B?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Apr 2015
Question: I took the Plan B pill recently and a few days later I got my period. It wasn't like my normal period, it was shorter and the blood was darker. I then started my birth control pack for the first time. About a week later, I have light bleeding like I am getting my period which it is about the normal time for me to get my period. I also have been having stomach aches for the past week. Should I continue the birth control or stop it? When will I get my period next and should I skip the sugar pills and start a new pack?

Brief Answer:
Withdrawal effect of Plan B. Continue birth control pill.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

1) You got withdrawal bleeding due to effect of Plan B. It is quite NORMAL phenomena and most women get this type of bleeding. Chance of pregnancy is quite LOW in this case.

2) You have started new birth control pack and light bleeding occurs due to hormonal imbalance. Stomach ache is also common for FIRST time pill user.

3) You should continue birth control pill as like previous. You can expect next period around due date or during intake of sugar pills.

4) You should start 2nd NEW pill pack after getting period (On the FIRST day of next cycle- D1) and continue rest pills on schedule time regularly.

This is my first pack that I just started as a first time user, I started it before my period because I thought I got my period due to the Plan B. I then got my period this week, but I continued to take the active pills. According the pack, the inactive pills start a week from Sunday. Should I skip the inactive pills and start a new pack? I am also having stomach pains for about two weeks now, should I just let my body adjust to the pill or is that not normal?

Brief Answer:
Stop placebo pill. Wait for period. Start new pack from D1.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up query.

You can start new pill pack (second one) from D1 of cycle or soon after period over. In that case, you should stop taking Placebo pills or inactive pills of current packet and wait for period.

As you are new pill-user, you may get some side effect like abdominal cramp, breast tenderness, headache etc. It will over come with the time. Don't be worried about this.

Hope, I have answered your query. Kindly, close the discussion.

All the best and good luck.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
