What Causes Frequent Urination At Night?

default
Posted on Fri, 18 Aug 2017
Question: My husband has frequent urination at night. He urinates about 30 ounces with eight trips to the bathroom from midnight to 5 AM. I think it could be over active bladder. He had cancer of the prostrate in the past and had 35 sessions of radiation so he is not a candidate for more radiation. he is 90 years old but other than this he's active and feels well. Is there anything that you can recommend that will slow down urinationation without creating a blockage. He had a cystoscopy recently and it was fine. His urologist in primary doctors have not been able to recommend anything to help him. This is been going on for four weeks.

Brief Answer:
Need further tests to be done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for query.

Based on the facts that you have posted your husband who has undergone multiple sessions of Radiation Therapy for cancer of the Prostate is facing a problem of Nocturia since months.

The nocturia that he has is mostly due to following factors--
1) Poorly controlled Diabetes (Blood Sugar level 180).
2) Post radiation Urethral and Bladder neck stenosis
3) Over Active Bladder Syndrome (OAB)

Considering his age, I would suggest following medications--
1) Tab Darifenacin once at night
2) Stop taking Finasteride
3) Avoid water or fluids after 5 P.M
4) Proper control of Diabetes is an essential factor to reduce nocturnal frequency.
5) Get urine culture sensitivity done to rule out Infection.

Hope I have answered your query, please feel free to ask if you have more questions, I shall be happy to help you.

Thanks and Regards.

Thank you so much for your response.

Are there side effects to this medication?
What dosage should he take?
Is it over counter med or prescription only?

I will look into this medication and have my husband follow up on your recommendation. I imagine it will take a couple of weeks for some results. I am also making juice with NOPAL which is like a cactus plant that is good for diabetes. Once again thank you and I'll be back to you with his progress.
